Digital Tachograph Questions & Answers


Q. What is Driver CPC?

A. It is a new legislation that was introduced into the European Union for Bus, Coach and Lorry drivers.

Q. Who does it affect?

A. It affects all Coach/bus drivers that drive vehicles over 9 seats for commercial reasons and for lorry drivers of vehicles that are over 3.5t, again for commercial reasons.

Q. When does it begin?

A. It began on 10th September 2008 for PSV drivers and 10th September 2009 for LGV drivers.

Q. How long is it?

A. Every driver must complete 35 hours of training within a five year period. Each course must be at least 7 hours long. (2 x 3.5 hours is possible if completed within 24 hours of each other).

Q. What happens when I’ve completed the 35 hours?

A. Every time you attend a course with an approved training centre you will have your details downloaded to the DSA database, on completion of the 35 hours you will be sent a DQC, Driver Qualification Card which is to be kept with you to provide evidence of completed training.

Q. How do I get my digital card (driver or company)?

A. Application forms are available from the DVLA, DVLA Local offices and VOSA test stations. Return the completed form with any relevant documentation and fee to DVLA, Swansea, SA99 1ST.  For further information please visit the VOSA Digital Tachograph Site, or call the DVLA on 0870 850 1074.

Q. I’ve left my driver card at home, can I drive a vehicle with a Digital Tachograph?

A. No, you must have your card to drive a Digital Tachograph vehicle.

Q. I’ve lost my driver card, can i drive a vehicle with a Digital Tachograph?

A. Yes, but only for a maximum of 15 days.

Q. Can i leave my driver card in the vehicle overnight?

A. Yes, you can leave your card in all week (providing the company doesn’t need to use the vehicle) if you want, you must remember to change the mode to ‘rest’ and select end country before you go home. In the morning you must select ‘other work’ and enter the begin country.

Q. How can I correct a manual entry if I make a mistake?

A. If your manual entries have been confirmed than they cannot be changed.

Q. How often do I have to download my Digital Tachograph Card & Vehicle Unit?

A. Your Driver card should be downloaded at least once every 28 days and the vehicle unit at least once every 56 days.

Q. My Analogue Tachograph charts show a speed trace, where is it on my digital driver card?

A. No speed is recorded on the driver card.

Q. My daily printouts and card analysis when downloaded show I have an infringement of ‘insertion of card while driving’ I always put my card in before I drive, why do I get this infringement?

A. It can take over a minute for the vehicle unit to process all the information, if you drive before this is completed then you will get this infringement.

Q. Why can’t I enter my manual entries in Local Time?

A. All entries in a Digital Tachograph are in UTC time, this is minus 1 hour in summer and local time in the winter.
